Atopic dermatitis (Atopic eczema) is a common and chronic inflammatory skin disease. The skin condition is most commonly diagnosed in children, however it can affect people of all ages. It is estimated to affect between 1.5% and 9.9% of adults in the UK [1, 2].
Atopic dermatitis can occur all over the body but often affects creases of body joints, such as knees and elbows, causing dry, reddened, or darkened skin, that can be itchy, scaly or cracked. Standard treatments of atopic dermatitis consist of moisturising and steroid creams, lotions, ointments and gels, however there is currently no cure, and those with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis may still experience worsening (flares) of their symptoms.
